Toy Clackers, also known as lik-Klaks, were a hit in the 1970s and continue to be cherished by antique toy collectors today. This toy features two plastic balls connected by a string, and when swung back and forth, they produce a distinctive “clacking” sound.
Invented in 1969 by the toy company Wham-O, which also brought us the Hula Hoop, Frisbee, and Superball, Toy Clackers quickly became a sensation. In their first year alone, over 10 million units were sold.
However, due to safety concerns, the toy was later banned in many places. Reports surfaced of the plastic balls shattering and causing injuries to children. Wham-O responded by creating a safer version of the toy, but it never matched the original’s popularity.
Despite these issues, Toy Clackers remain beloved by collectors and those who fondly remember playing with them as kids. The toy is a nostalgic reminder of simpler times, and those lucky enough to own a pair still enjoy them.
I never had a pair, but I remember playing with them at friends’ houses. Did you ever have any?
